Optic Nerve Atrophy

A lady requested my help with her low vision.  She wanted to be able to watch her children play sports.  The only way that she‘s able to tell which child is hers is by having them wear white shoes when the rest of the team wears dark shoes.  I’m Dr. Dave Armstrong.  I’m a low vision optometrist in Virginia.

This nice lady lost much of her vision about 10 years ago from Optic Nerve Atrophy. Many of the optic nerve fibers in both eyes had died.  She was using over the counter reading glasses that have lots of distortion in the lenses.   She could read with them but she needed to be just a few inches from  the screen in order to use her computer.  Her distance vision was 20/320 with the right eye and 20/360 with the left.  Regular glasses made no improvement.

During the low vision evaluation I tested her with several different bioptic telescopic glasses.  The best proved to be 5X bioptic telescopic glasses like these.  They improved her vision to 20/50.  That’s a big improvement.  I demonstrated the 5X bioptic glasses outdoors and she was amazed to be able to read traffic signs along the highway from 100 yards or farther.

Another goal was to return to driving. Unfortunately, even with the bioptic telescopic glasses her vision did not meet the Virginia DMV requirements.

With her vision so dramatically improved by the telescopic glasses my patient began to think of other uses for them.  She quickly realized that she’d be able to read signs in stores.  That would make trips to the grocery store much easier.

It is a pleasure to help nice people like this who have impaired vision.  When their vision is improved life becomes much easier and more enjoyable.  If you have a vision loss and would like help seeing better give me a call.  I’ll ask you a few questions about your remaining vision and tell you if I can help you.  Call me at 866 321-2030 for a free, no obligation telephone consultation.  I’d love to help you.
