Here's what to do If You Can’t Pass the DMV Eye Test

People with Macular Degeneration, Stargardt Disease and other eye conditions may become unable to pass the vision test at the DMV.  That’s a big deal.  Without driving they’ll lose much of their independence.  Often they’re unaware that the DMV in Virginia, and most other states, allows people with reduced vision to drive while wearing bioptic telescopic glasses like my patients are wearing in these pictures.

I’m Dr. Dave Armstrong, a low vision optometrist in Virginia.  For years I’ve been helping people meet the vision requirements to continue driving while wearing bioptic telescopic glasses that I’ve prescribed for them.  I understand the DMV requirements and I know how to guide my patients through the process to become licensed.

If you’d like to keep driving, give me a call.  I'll ask a few questions about your remaining vision and tell you if I can help you continue driving legally and safely.  You may also click the link below to see the Virginia DMV vision requirements for driving while wearing bioptic telescopic glasses.
