14 Years of Safe Driving with Stargardt Disease

Yesterday a lady called and reminded me that I had prescribed bioptic telescopic glasses for her in 2008.  She has Stargardt Disease and has been driving safely and legally with them.  14 years of driving with her bioptics.  Without them she would not have qualified for a driver’s license.  Thanks to the bioptic telescopic glasses she has enjoyed 14 years of independence.

She lives in Virginia, quite a distance from the any of my offices, and has been seeing a doctor closer to home for the annual vision screening that the DMV requires of bioptic drivers.  She recently went to a different ophthalmologist for the screening.  The doctor told the lady that she rarely sees a patient with Stargardt Disease.  Unfortunately, the doctor did not complete the DMV form, Med 40, correctly and the lady’s license was terminated 3 days ago.  She is 64 years old and is very upset that she’s lost her license.

She will be seeing me in a few days and I expect her to meet DMV standards.  I will complete Med 40 properly and she will get her license and her independence back.  We also expect to up grade her 14 year old bioptics.

Stargardt Disease is an uncommon condition, only 1 person out of 8-10,000.  Most optometrists and ophthalmologists rarely see a Stargardt patient.  Because my practice is dedicated to helping people with impaired vision I help someone with Stargardt every week.  I’m very familiar with the process of helping my patients obtain a bioptic telescopic lens driver’s license.  I’d be happy to help you.  Give me a call for a no obligation telephone consultation.
