Help for Out of State Patients

I’d like to tell you about a new service that I offer to people with impaired vision from Stargardt Disease, macular degeneration and other conditions.

People with Stargardt Disease or macular degeneration often come to me from outside of Virginia requesting help with their vision.  They want to see better so they can watch their children play sports, use a computer, read and sometimes they want to be able to drive.  I always speak with them by phone before scheduling.  By asking a few questions I’m able to tell them if I can help them achieve their goals.

When they come to one of my offices in Virginia I carefully evaluate their vision with different types of low vision glasses.  I prescribe whatever will best help them meet their goals.  It has always been necessary for the patient to return to me to receive the glasses, verify the vision improvement and be taught how to use them.

That is still best, but I now offer the option of mailing them the glasses and sending a personally made video describing the use of the glasses and the process for adapting to this new way of seeing.  They follow the directions in the video, we talk by phone to answer any questions and they do not have to make the long trip back to Virginia.
