Stargardt Disease

Stargardt’s Disease

Low vision can seriously disrupt the quality of life of many individuals, and Stargardt’s Disease is one of them. Here at Low Vision Optometry in Roanoke County, our optometrist, Dr. Armstrong, offers devices that can improve your vision from this condition.

What is Stargardt’s Disease?

Stargardt’s Disease is an inherited eye disorder that affects your central vision. This disorder causes the macula, which is the part of the retina that is responsible for the central vision, to deteriorate due to an accumulation of yellow pigments in the cells of the macula. So far, there is no cure for Stargardt’s Disease, but there are devices that can help improve vision.

Bioptic Telescopic Glasses

When you have Stargardt’s Disease, mid-range and long-distance vision are affected. This makes it difficult to see faces, drive, watch television, or see anything that is not close-up. Bioptic telescopic glasses are like having mini telescopes attached to your regular eyeglasses, and they come in a range of designs and magnifications. These glasses don’t affect your current prescription, allowing you to see objects in the distance better.

Bioptic telescopic glasses make it easier for people with Stargardt’s Disease to interact visually with the world around them. In the early stages of this disease, bioptic telescopic glasses can make it possible for you to drive, see faces of those around you, watch a movie, and enjoy a concert or play.
