"Just make my glasses a little stronger."

In a recent LinkedIn video an optometric colleague, Dr Carly Rose, asked the question “Does your prescription keep getting worse every year?”  Of course, she was referring to your eyeglass prescription.  She then went on to speak about myopia management which is a service that she offers in her practice.

Her question made me think of my low vision patients.  Many of them come to me hoping that I can prescribe glasses that are stronger and will allow them to see better.  Some have been told by their eye doctor that stronger lenses will not help and some doctors have prescribed a bit stronger glasses that the patient discovers do not help.  That is very disappointing to the patient.  The problem is that when someone has macular degeneration, Stargardt Disease, diabetic retinopathy, ocular albinism, optic atrophy or some other eye condition they require more than a stronger lens for better eyesight.  They need magnification.

Low vision optometrists like me have the expertise and experience necessary to prescribe various types and amounts of magnification.  Often that can be accomplished by special glasses.  Sometimes electronic magnification is the best choice.  Either way, the low vision doctor is the person who can help.

In my low vision practice I prescribe specialized telescopic and microscopic glasses that help people with Macular Degeneration, Stargardt Disease, Diabetic Retinopathy and other conditions maximize their eyesight. I help people return to reading, using a computer, watching TV. Some are able to continue driving.
