Long Distance Low Vision Care

In the past couple days I have had an email request from a doctor in Mexico and a phone message from a person in Europe.  Both were hoping that there would be a way that I can help someone with low vision without them coming to one of my offices.  I appreciate such inquiries but, unfortunately, the answer is no.  People with macular degeneration or other conditions that have taken some of their vision require one on-one-care in order to be helped.  The low vision evaluation is very personalized and the intention and the challenge is to take the person from where they are now (remaining vision) to being able to read or drive or use their computer or recognize faces of their friends or whatever goals they may have.  That requires careful evaluation with a variety of low vision glasses or other devices so the best choices can be prescribed.

I am often asked if I can use the person's existing eyeglass prescription and their visual acuity to provide them with some helpful eyeglasses.  I wish it was that easy.  Without having the patient in my office and testing them appropriately there is no way to know  which type of glasses and how much magnification will be right for them.  There are many options to consider.

Often patients comment that they've never had this type of testing or had a doctor spend so much time with them.  Low vision care requires time, skill, patience and years of experience.  I have been doing this for many years and spend an hour or more face to face with each patient.  That is what it takes to help my patients.

Because of my years of experience I've gotten very good at asking the right questions when I speak with someone on the phone.  The questions help me determine if I will be able to help them see better and function better.  I have to tell some people that I am sorry, I do not believe I can help you.  I only offer an appointment to those who I am very confident that I'll be able to help.  Of the people who are scheduled for a low vision evaluation I am able to help over ninety percent.

If you are suffering a vision loss and have had to give up some activities that you enjoy give me a call.  I will be happy to talk with you.  I'll tell you if I can help you and will only offer you an appointment if I honestly feel that I can improve things for you.  You may call me toll free 1 866 321-2030.  My receptionist will take your name and phone number and I will call you back within a couple days.
