Senior Drivers

Today's Roanoke Times has a very well written, compassionate article discussing the frustration of a man who after a lifetime of safe driving is facing loss of his driver's permit.  Dan Casey describes  the devastating loss of independence that results from losing driving privileges.

The gentleman in the article is not dealing with a vision loss but his reaction is similar to many patients who are unable to meet the vision standards of the DMV.  The article quotes a DMV spokesperson who states that the DMV's "goal is to keep drivers on the road for as long as they have the ability to drive".

I have found the DMV to be very helpful when I have called with questions about a particular patient who desires to obtain a driver's permit allowing them to drive with bioptic telescopic glasses.  Virginia, like most states, offers a special permit for those who cannot pass the vision requirements for an unrestricted license.  I have helped many people stay on the road using bioptics.
