Calcium Supplementation May Play a Role in Macular Degeneeration

A)A First Look, the online news update from the American Optometric Association today reported on research indicating that high daily doses of calcium increase the risk of macular degeneration.  This information may be especially important to people with other risk factors.  If you have a family history of macular degeneration or are a smoker perhaps you should not be taking large daily doses of calcium.  Ask your optometrist or ophthalmologist at your next visit what they advise.

(4/11, Laidman) reported that research suggests that people “who take more than 800 mg of calcium daily are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) as those who” do not. The findings were published online in JAMA Ophthalmology.
