Smartglasses

Last week I had an opportunity to try NuEyes, a new device for the visually impaired.  It is worn on your face, over your glasses and magnifies whatever is seen.  Two of my patients tried it out.  The older found some help for reading but not for TV or outdoor vision.  The younger man was impressed by the technology and said that he saw the best he'd ever seen.  NuEyes has a wide range of applications.  In addition to magnifying vision for distance and near it allows you to watch videos and read your email from the internet.  In fact, you can actually record video with it.  Because of its many functions it has quite a few control buttons.  In addition to using the buttons to control it you can also speak and ask it to change some of its functions.  A small remote control unit also makes the changes.  I could see that enthusiasm for NuEyes was different for the older man than it was for the young, tech savvy man.  We'll see how the device works out.  I have not yet decided to add it to my practice.
