Patients with Toxoplasmosis

Most of the low vision patients that I see and write about have macular degeneration.  There are many other conditions causing vision loss that can be helped.

In the last few weeks I've seen two patients with toxoplasmosis.  That's an infection caused by a parasite that results in scaring of the retina.  Depending on where on the retina the scars are located there can be severe vision loss or minimal loss.  Many of these people can be helped by carefully prescribed low vision glasses.

One man, who I saw this week, has been driving with bioptic telescopic glasses for over 20 years.  He has a Virginia driver's permit requiring the use of the bioptics.

The most important factor to me when I am helping a low vision patient is how much vision remains, not what caused the vision loss.  My challenge, then, is to prescribe glasses that will maximize the remaining vision.  Sometimes that takes low vision glasses, sometimes other magnifying devices and sometimes I am able to prescribe regular glasses.  It all depends upon how much vision remains for me to work with.
