Last week I talked with 2 patients who I'd prescribed low vision glasses for about 10 years ago. One, a lady, has macular degeneration. She's been driving safely and legally with her bioptic telescopic glasses for 10 years. She is very happy to continue to enjoy the independence that driving gives her. Without the telescopic glasses she'd be relying on someone else every time she wanted to go somewhere.
The other patient, a man, has ocular histoplasmosis which has left scars on his retinas and impaired his vision. He uses the microscopic glasses that I prescribed for him daily. They allow him to read. After 10 years the only problem he's had is that the frame has recently broken. I'm getting him a new frame, no lens change and he may be good for another 10 years. I hope so.
It is great for me to hear from people like this and know that the glasses that I prescribed for them have allowed them to continue with normal activities. The glasses have changed their lives.
