A young man seeking help

An 18 year old young man from Louisiana called me this morning asking for help with driving.  He has Stargardt Disease, also known as juvenile macular degeneration.  He told me that he's been driving illegally, without a license in his small town and wants to get a license.  Like many other people with vision loss his local eye doctor has been telling him there's nothing that can be done to help him.  The young man has had to struggle to read while he was in school and not, understandingly, wants to drive.

Louisiana is one of many states that license people with impaired vision to drive while wearing bioptic telescopic glasses.  This man sounds like a good candidate.  Because he is several states away I've referred him to a low vision optometrist in Louisiana.
