Good Vision Requires Good Lighting

Proper lighting is very important for people with macular degeneration.  I've been told many times by patients that they take things that they need to read to a window or outdoors.  The natural daylight helps them see better and allows them to read things that they could not in poorer light.

As part of the low vision evaluation I always demonstrate and discuss proper lighting.  I recommend a 24 watt Ott Lite positioned about a foot or less from the book or paper being read.  The Ott Lite that I prefer has a goose neck and can be positioned wherever it will cast it's light across the entire page.

If you've lost vision from macular degeneration or some other eye disease be sure that you are using good light when you are reading or doing some other tasks.  It can make a lot of difference.
