Macular Degeneration and Reading. New study

A study of 24 persons with macular degeneration compared to 22 people with normal vision looked at reading speed and comprehension was published in the January 5 edition of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.  It confirmed what anyone who has macular degeneration or who has observed someone with macular degeneration knows.  Summarizing the results, people with macular degeneration read slower and have poorer comprehension than those with normal vision.  It will be interesting to see if the researchers go to the obvious next step and evaluate how speed and comprehension improve when low vision glasses are prescribed to the subjects with macular degeneration.
