What eye problems can you help?

A retinal specialist who has referred many macular degeneration patients for my help recently asked an interesting question.  "Can you help someone with a macular hole?"  I explained that I have helped people with macular holes see better.  The important thing to me is how much vision the person has remaining, not what's caused the vision loss.  If the person has some vision for me to work with I can usually help them.  I've prescribed low vision telescopic and microscopic glasses that improve vision for people with albinism, Stargardt's disease, optic atrophy, rod-cone dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, visual field loss and other conditions.

By speaking with the person by telephone I can question them and determine if there is enough vision remaining for me to help.  I do not schedule people unless I am quite certain that I can help them see better.
